I’m not sure if this is that common of a problem for most girls today but my daughter is 13 years old and finds it hard to shop for clothes that she feels comfortable in.  She doesn’t like low cut or spaghetti straps or even sleeveless tops or dresses and hates it when tops show her tummy.  She prefers skirts that come mid-thigh or lower as opposed to mini-skirts.  I guess you could say she likes modest dresses and tops. Don’t get me wrong, I love this fact about her.  I remember wearing some things in high school that I’m not sure how I got out of the house with.  Needless to say, I would like to encourage her choices in fashion and I don’t always have the time to make everything she wears.  I’m sure as she gets a little farther into her teens, her fashion sense may change but I’d like to make it easy for her to know where to go to find things she is comfortable in.  So, in checking around I have found and would like to share some good links and places to shop that have modest dresses and we have a little more luck with her fashion sense. Here’s a quick list of places to shop: http://shop.pacsun.com/girls/dresses/index.cat http://www.landsend.com http://www.oldnavy.com/browse/category.do?cid=15292 As far as patterns go, once we finally decide on a style she likes, sometimes it is a modest dress, sometimes not, we alter the top to raise the neckline to a comfortable level for her or add an inset in some cases to keep the integrity of the style.  Other options include wearing a t-shirt or tank top under something with thinner straps or lower necklines.  You can also check out the video in my previous post Watch how to sew cute modest dresses in less than one hour . I’m not sure why so many clothes for girls are simply too revealing for comfort and why it should be so hard to find cute and pretty fashions for kids who like modest clothing.  I hope this post helps other girls and moms who are looking for places to find modest dresses and clothes that they can feel good about.

Here is a video showing how to sew modest dresses in less than one hour.  For time saving measures she uses pattern weights, the snip and rip method and fold as you go sewing to complete this child size modest dress in less than one hour.  But there is no reason you can’t make the same type of modest dresses using a ladies size patterns.  She uses the back bodice of a top with elastic casing at the top to make both the front and back.  This gives you a modest dress that is both comfortable and easy to sew. And the fact that you can make it in less than an hour with her time saving tips gives me no excuses not to get busy and sew dresses today.

Sew Dresses has found another great video from Threadbanger that shows you not only an easy way to alter shirts to make them fit better, (also works great to alter dresses that do not have a waistband) but also how to make your own body double form with just an old t-shirt, duct tape and a friend.  I love their videos, as you can tell.

I found this site with the video below and thought it had some great ideas for how to dress for success whether for the office, evening or casual look.  Katie Stiles features videos to deal with the fashion issues of having large breasts, not that I have this problem.  My problem areas of what she calls the “mommy tummy” but I like her suggestions in this video and think they work well for how to dress with my fashion challenge as well.

Here’s what Katie says:

Having large breasts can pose as a serious challenge for women when it comes to choosing and finding the right clothes. Whether it is business wear, evening wear or casual wear, it is important that the clothes fit correctly. Women with large breasts do do not want to attract unwanted male attention. This often leaves many women who have large breasts wearing boring and loose fitting T-shirts as a last result. This before and after video will show you some of the mistakes that women with a large bust make when it comes to choosing clothes and some great clothing selections that can flatter such a figure. You can be stylish and sexy but also be taken seriously when you choose the right clothes that compliment a full bust line. Check out more makeovers at: http://beforeandaftertv.com
